Railway operators rarely get to build their signaling system from scratch. Most of them are running equipment from several vendors, bought over decades, and now need to migrate parts of it or connect a new system to what’s already there. That’s the real interoperability problem, not two systems that were designed to work together, but ones that weren’t.

The demo

At InnoTrans, we’re demonstrating how we handle exactly that. Together with NEAT, Schneider Electric, and Pilz, we’ve set up a live demo of a railway line split into three consecutive signaling areas, each controlled by a different vendor’s safe computer or PLC. The handover between signaling areas is handled by direct controller-to-controller communication, ensuring safe train operation across the line.

The interlocking logic for all three areas is generated with Prover iLock, which also simulates the wayside equipment for the demo. Prover Station provides the HMI, giving a live view to control and observe the traffic on the line.

This demo proves the capability to generate certified interlocking logic for one vendor’s platform, and enables infrastructure managers to make sure it interoperates correctly with whatever other systems, old or new, and from any vendor.

At InnoTrans, we showcase a clean, self-contained demo that generates the logic for all three vendors at once as a convenient way to prove this capability, though not a necessary requirement.

The three products

NEAT: GeminiX platform, a SIL-4 2oo2 hardware architecture built on two independent, synchronized processors.

Schneider Electric: Modicon M580 Safety PAC, running the safety I/O we need on this line, communicates over OPC UA through its BMENUA0100 module.

Pilz: PSS u2 P42 F/S-R, the safety controller at the core of its PSSrail railway control system, built for EULYNX compatibility and programmable in accordance with EN/IEC 61131-3.

Schneider Electric isn’t exhibiting at InnoTrans this year, but their Modicon M580 Safety PAC is very much part of the demo in Prover’s booth.
